Barack Obama refused a 9-item Indian breakfast for a cheese sandwich, leaving the Taj kitchen upset
'Breakfast like a king', goes the first part of an ancient proverb. But it did not seem to apply to the first couple of the US, who snubbed nine varieties of Indian breakfast items for a simple cheese grilled sandwich.
Sources told MiD DAY that on November 7, the chef at Taj Mahal Hotel had prepared a full Indian breakfast including dosas, idlis and medu vadas among others, expecting the President and his wife to prefer an Indian breakfast like they had savoured a desi dinner the previous night.

But this plan apparently did not go down well with the President's taste buds.
For dinner on November 6, the President had eaten an elaborate variety of Indian dishes that included aloo tikki, varqi crab, kebab platters, sugarcane sorbets, malai palak, chicken biryani, assorted breads and special Indian desserts.
No desi breakfast
Sources said that along with the south Indian breakfast items, fresh fruit platters, assorted cheese platters and Bircher Muesli (rolled oats with yoghurt, honey and fruits) were also prepared for the President but he did not taste any of them.
In addition, the assorted bakers basket, which is a selection of croissants, muffins, Danish party and scrambled egg wrap and Akuri wrap (Indian style spicy scrambled egg wrapped in a dosa) too remained untouched.
"The President asked his personal chef to prepare a cheese grilled sandwich. The only thing the chef borrowed from the hotel's kitchen was cheese to make the sandwich for the couple," said the source.
When MiD DAY contacted Taj Mahal Hotel, the hotel officials refused to comment on the story.
