The Road Transport department plans to link all Regional Transport Offices (RTO) in the state with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC)

The Road Transport department plans to link all Regional Transport Offices (RTO) in the state with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Information about the history of vehicles registered anywhere in the state and any license holder will now be available on the network. Background checks of both vehicles and license holders will also be possible within seconds. RTO officials can even access details on registered offences from the consolidated information network.

If the Road Transport department has its way, the project will also eliminate malpractices like fake licenses and stolen vehicles, as information about license holders and vehicles will be tagged along with a photograph and other biometric identity.

"Currently, if an RTO official wants to get details of a suspicious vehicle registered in Aurangabad, he will have to call up the Aurangabad RTO. Then they will manually check records. However, with the linking of the local and centralised server, all information will be consolidated and information exchange will be easier," said an RTO official, on condition of anonymity.

The department also plans to introduce citizen-centric services like letting prospective second hand vehicle owners access information on the number of previous owners. You may also access your driver's traffic offence history.

"These are the broad areas we are looking at. The project is at a very nascent stage and will be fully implemented only after two years. We are doing this in partnership with the NIC, our software consultant and implementing agency. We aim to computerise all 46 RTO offices in the state," added the RTO
official.
