Rajendra Kamble was 'irregular' at work for the past six months, says his superior
A police constable committed suicide on Saturday morning, because he couldn't stand the harassment he faced at the Oshiwara Police Station where he worked. Rajendra Kamble (47) ended his life by hanging himself on the rod of a ceiling fan, with the help of a nylon rope, at his Kherwadi residence in Bandra. The deceased lived alone at his 7x7 sq ft home, after he had been divorced 12 years ago. His mother lives with one of his six sisters.
According to sources, the constable was a victim of ridicule at his workplace. The senior officers at Oshiwara police station harassed and pressurised him. "Tired of the mockery he faced, he took his life," said the source.
The deceased's mother used to visit her son daily, and cook his meals. As usual, she went to his house on Saturday too to find the door locked from inside. When she didn't hear his voice despite making repeated calls, she informed the neighbours. The neighbours broke the door open, and found Kamble hanging. They called the police.
Kamble's family is in shock. His mother and sisters refuse to comment. "He was a good man. He never drank alcohol nor was he addicted to tobacco," said a close relative on condition of anonymity.
"The senior police inspector of Oshiwara police station was called in for investigation. He said that Kamble was irregular at work for the past six months," said Uday Singh Rathod, senior police inspector, Kherwadi police station. "We are investigating the matter," he added.
Sunday Mid Day tried to the contact DK Rupawate, senior police inspector of the Oshiwara police station, but he was unavailable for comment.
