A JEWELLERY shop owner's inability to repay loans drove him to commit suicide by consuming acid used to clean floors late last night.

Vasudevan Punnu Swami Asari (41), who owns Selam Jewellers in Antop Hill, had taken a Rs 30-lakh loan from three moneylenders at 30 per cent interest.

Asari was rushed to Sion Hospital but was declared dead on admission

Asari's family members alleged that his creditors had come to the shop last night and threatened that they would kill him if he did not repay them soon.

A depressed Asari went to his house in the same building shortly after 11 pm and narrated the incident to his brother.

A few minutes later, he went to another room in the house and drank acid without any of his family members' knowledge.

He started vomiting blood soon after and was rushed to the nearby Sion Hospital, but was declared dead on admission.

Asari's brother, Indrakumar, said, "We were sitting at home when he came and told me what had happened. Sometime later, he started throwing up blood and we saw a bottle next to him.

When we smelled the bottle, we found that he had consumed acid. He was dead by the time we reached the hospital."

Police inspector Kamble from Antop Hill police station said, "The suicide occurred at 11 pm. We have registered an after death report and will investigate the matter after the post mortem report arrives."

Doctors from Sion hospital refused to comment on the issue.
