A 30-year-old man, after allegedly sodomising a four-year-old on Saturday night, tried to evade the police the following morning in Ulhasnagar by disguising himself as a woman, little realising that his cover would do him in.

The accused, Irshad Shaikh, donned a burqa and went to hide in a friend's bakery opposite Shahad railway station.

To throw the police off guard, he asked the friend if he could take his three children with him so nobody would suspect anything because of his womanly garb.

However, alert residents of the area saw through the subterfuge when they noticed his pants and his manly gait outside the station around 10.30 am on Sunday.

Assuming that he had kidnapped the three children, the locals lynched him and handed him over to the police.

That's when the cops realised that Shaikh was wanted in a sodomy case reported the same morning, and arrested him.

According to cops, Shaikh is employed with a Samosa Supplier Company owned by Rizwan Shaikh at Sant Rohidas Nagar in Ulhasnagar.

Police said that since Shaikh was wearing a pair of jeans and had slippers on just one foot, he was exposed. His ruse completely fell through when a few locals asked him to identify himself; he gave evasive replies in a man's voice.

According to the police, on Saturday, the victim's family had left the minor in the care of his uncle who owns a grocery store in the neighbourhood of the company where the accused worked, while they attended a devotional discourse.

After they returned around 11 pm, the child complained of unbearable pain to his mother, and upon being questioned, narrated the incident of sexual abuse to her how a man had picked him up from the grocery store and taken him to the samosa workshop to molest him.

The mother immediately took the child to the workshop where the victim identified the accused.

On Sunday morning, the family registered a complaint at Ulhasnagar police station, and on returning, thrashed the accused. Fearing for his life, he tried to flee.

He put on a burqa and asked one of his friends, who was the owner of a bakery near Shahad railway station, if he could take his three children with him and hide in the bakery.

That is when the locals spotted him and handed him over to the police, thinking he had abducted the three children.

"We have arrested the accused under Section 377 of the IPC. He will be produced in court on Monday," said Ajay Kamble, assistant police inspector, Ulhasnagar police station.

During interrogation, Shaikh confessed to sodomising the minor and planning to hide in his friend's bakery.
