Principal calls cops presuming ex-students to be thieves stealing trophies from Sydenham College

The Brouhaha festival organised by students of Sydenham College was witness to a comedy of errors yesterday.

The Marine Drive police picked up around 20 students, including a few alumni, after principal MV Kagalkar alleged that the students had stolen some trophies from the college.

The police picked up around 20 students for questioning but let them off around 9 pm when the students convinced them that there had been a misunderstanding

However, after an hour of explaining and clearing the air, the students were finally let off at 9 pm.

The incident took place when ex-students of the college came to the final day of the festival with trophies they had won in 2008-2009.

"Our seniors had come to the college with their past trophies, which is an annual trend. When the fest got over, the ex-students started to collect their trophies to return home.

The principal saw them, thought they were thieves and called the police," said a student from the college.

Ex-student says

An ex-student said, "One of the alumni picked up the trophy and started walking away when the principal spotted him.

This cause her to doubt the student's identity and she immediately called the police." Officials from the Marine Drive police arrived at the scene andu00a0 picked up most of the students present at the spot for questioning.

Munir Khan Inamdar, inspector in-charge of Marine Drive police station, said, "There was a misunderstanding between the students and the college principal.

We picked up the students from the college after the principal alleged that the students were stealing trophies. However, the students cleared the air later."

Inamdar said the principal had claimed that the students had not taken her permission to display the trophies and that the students had spoken rudely to her.

The Other Side
MV Kagalkar, principal,u00a0 Sydenham College, however, denied the incident. "There was no issue at all. We have filed no police complaint against any one. We carried out the festival in a smooth and organised manner."
