Inspection team sent to Raghuleela Mall in Borivli, which allegedly sets up unauthorised structures on its terraces to rent them out for weddings

A MALL in Borivli has run afoul of the BMC for decorating and renting out its terraces as wedding venues. The construction of any unauthorised structures with bamboos, cloth or any other decorative materials on the terrace of buildings in the city is against civic rules.

Despite the BMC issuing three notices to Wadhwa Builders, which rents out the banquets and terraces of the Raghuleela Mall, the management allegedly continues to setup pandals to host wedding receptions

The local BMC ward office has issued three notices two in the last 20 days and one eight months back to Wadhwa Builders, which rents out the banquets and terraces of the Raghuleela Mall in Borivli, to remove all the decoration and pandal materials from the terrace.

The management, however, allegedly continues to setup pandals to host wedding receptions.

"We issued a notice to them under Section 349 of the BMC Act, 1988, wherein no terraces in the city are allowed to have any unauthorised structures with bamboos, cloth or any other decorative materials.

An inspection was carried out yesterday and the reports were submitted to me by the assistant engineer. We will take action against them if any irregularities are found," said Vijay Kamble, Assistant Municipal Commissioner (R Central Ward).

Borivli Corporator Sandhya Vipul Doshi said, "The mall had received notices earlier and had removed all the pandals but put them up again for a wedding on Sunday.

They must have removed the pandals again when the team came for inspection and will put them up again in due course. How many times are they going to violate the norms?"

'Everybody does it'

An official from Sagar Decorators, which has its office in the mall and takes care of decorations for the mall's three terraces and one banquet hall, said, on condition of anonymity, "We rent out the terraces during the wedding season and the rate differs as per the requirements.

The charge for taking the place on rent begins from Rs 35,000. There are so many residential buildings which build temporary sheds on the terrace for parties or functions but the BMC doesn't take action against them."

The Other Side
A spokesperson from Wadhwa Builders, which rents out the banquets and terraces of the Raghuleela Mall, said, "The BMC had sent us a notice some eight months back because we had built a temporary structure to accommodate two weddings on short notice. We had removed it and had notified the BMC by sending them photographs of the place. We have stopped leasing out terraces for celebrations."
