A fourth-storey flat in a crumbling building collapsed on to the third floor, taking the entire family down
The ground literally shook beneath the Kapasi family when they were having dinner last night.
Around 12.30 am, the floor of their one-room flat in Devidas Mansion on Balaram Street on Grant Road caved in, taking all the members down with it.
The Kapasi family was having dinner late last night when suddenly the floor caved in
The family of seven escaped the disintegration largely unhurt, except Yousuf Kapasi (9), who sustained major injuries and has been admitted to a hospital nearby.
The flat's floor fell on to the third floor, injuring one member of the family, while rest of the six members escaped.
When residents of the building heard the thud, they ran towards the room and rescued the family members. They took everyone to Hurkisondas Hospital in Grant Road.
"The building is very old and there is some ongoing construction in the building behind it. This must be why the floor collapsed.
There is another room on the same floor, which is sinking," said a fire brigade official.
Shabbair Petiwala, a relative who had come to visit the Kapasis right before the floor collapsed, had sensed something was amiss.
"When I came here around 11 pm, I asked them about the sinking floor.
The furniture was tilted at an odd angle. As soon as I came out of the house at 12.30 am, the room sank," he said, adding, "The entire floor fell below."
The Grant Road police said the matter is under investigation.
