This paper reported on the chaos outside the Gateway of India, Colaba. The report was supported by pictures that showed the heritage precinct. We focussed on pedestrians especially who are at peril over a disaster unfolding thanks to BEST bus stops opposite the Gateway and outside the Yacht Club in the vicinity.

The buses are parked ahead of a line of cabs at the kerb adding to a very crowded situation. One footpath leading to the Gateway is encroached in patches, forcing people to walk on the road. With a cab stand on the corner, buses turn in dangerously. Cabs charge as per will during high density time, with Rs 100 being minimum fare demanded from desperate passengers, many who cave in.

The visitors walk inches away from vehicles. Groups of people hare across roads, crossing hurriedly. As visitors swarm the area, all order seems to have gone with the wind with a disaster/traffic related fatality waiting to happen there.

While buses are full bringing people to the area, decision makers need to reorganise the area keeping safety in mind. The buses cannot stop at that point. Cabs have to be arranged elsewhere, within walking distance with an eye on them plying by meter. Delineated pedestrian pathways leading to and from the monument and promenade are a must. Signage stating where people get off or take a bus is vital. A clueless visitor is an especially vulnerable one. Helplines should be clearly announced.

The aim is to decongest, manage with wisdom and vision and allow both, pedestrians and vehicles access but within traffic rules and strict guidelines. Put lives first, should be our motto.
