This paper's report about the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Olympic (MGMO) pool at Shivaji Park in Dadar West being reopened after two months highlighted the euphoria the member base demonstrated as they could get back to the waters of the iconic facility. Like most civic pools, this one was closed, too, as we had weak rainfall initially and Mumbai was grappling with a water crunch.
Chats were whirring, and speculation was rife that the space was going to be âdeveloped' and the closure was a cover-up for these plans. This, though, was grist for the gossip mills. While the happiness and relief were evident as the pool reopened on August 16, Sunday, we hope that this one and all civic pools, in fact, pay attention to some top concerns by members.
First, the Dadar pool authority stated that the water is clean and tested by a BMC-approved laboratory.
The cleanliness of the water should be maintained throughout, not just in the first flush of the reopening. That is basic for more than 7000 swimmers who are members at this facility.
Fees should not be increased annually but every five years, as this is not entertainment but a health facility. This is a persistent bugbear with monthly fees touching nearly R1000 for one month per person,
which is tough for families. Even with inflation, such fee hikes are not justified.
There should be enough lifeguards at the pool, and in fact, all pools; as a no-brainer, this can make the difference between life and death. Members must be respectful of the facilities at the swim complex, using them with care.
