Fists of fury flew at Mumbai's upscale Colaba, when an elderly doctor was assaulted by two men early morning on Sunday. This occurred early in the morning as the surgeon was walking home and witnessed a car come in from the wrong side. In this paper's report about the incident, the doc said he stopped the car and pointed out that it was traversing the wrong way on a one-way street. Instead of apologising or turning back, the occupants, a driver and passenger, hurled abuse, after which the verbal altercation escalated to a physical one.
The accused said that the doc had abused him; it was an ego battle that spiralled into a fight. Violence can never be an answer to whatever transpires between individuals. While this is one case, we have witnessed citizens who point out traffic violations are often at the receiving end of aggro and physical assault. Even if the wrongdoer feels belittled in some way, there is always an option of dialogue, approaching the cops, or simply doing the right thing, course correction, and following the rules.
Reactions like these can lead to serious injury. We witness so many traffic/road situations which start with some kind of argument. This then moves on to abuse, shouting, and insults accompanied by threats. Then there is physical assault. Police must react to complaints filed, investigate matters and come to a conclusion with the aid of CCTV footage. This is yet another reason for our city roads to have comprehensive, sharp surveillance and finally take appropriate action. Meanwhile, observe traffic rules to the T. Wrong-side driving, even in an empty street, is very dangerous.
