We are always chuffed when it comes to enhancing greenery, so it is cheers for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is set to develop multiple forest pockets across the city using the Japanese Miyawaki technique, as part of its urban forest initiative.

After launching its urban forest initiative, the civic body developed urban forests at over 60 open spaces using the Miyawaki technique over two years. In a city where space is scarce, Miyawaki is about creating green spaces vertically. It comprises packing saplings that will eventually grow into trees very close together, like the proverbial sardines in a tin, except here the sardines are saplings. A pocket of green is then created, and though it is narrow, the impression is that of a forest with eye-pleasing foliage.

There are huge challenges when it comes to space here, so we must encourage the green in whatever way it comes. Anything that breaks the predominant grey concrete of our city, gives relief to the eyes, and uplifts spirits is a welcome addition to the landscape.

Parks are the ultimate; little gardens are also something we should aspire to, but Miyawaki forests can and should be part of the landscape. Building complexes can add green wherever possible; even little plants in compounds are a break.

Tree plantation must be undertaken with robustness and vision, so that the trees survive, and it is in areas that need trees that should benefit from the plantations. People can green their homes if possible. That the civic authorities and leaders are actually taking charge and reviving Miyawaki is extremely heartening.
