Putting the brakes on speed devils on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, by mid-October, the installation of 430 advanced cameras at 106 locations will conclude, marking a significant step in the implementation of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) project spearheaded by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), a report said in this paper.

A senior official said that the state-of-the-art cameras will be interconnected through optical fibre to a central control room. It will serve to document various traffic violations, including speeding, reckless driving, wrong-way driving, motorway stops, lane changes, among others.

MSRDC officials informed mid-day that the extensive network of high-tech CCTV cameras, including night vision cameras, will make it tough for motorists to exceed speed limits on the expressway. Violation challans will be generated immediately and validated by officials, with all evidence (photos, videos, etc.) attached to the violation and sent to the vehicle owner.

The entire system will go a long way in halting accidents due to irresponsible driving on the Expressway. What is important though is that there has to be consistency. This management system should work smoothly with all facets and locations where information is relayed, working and in coordination with each other.

Very often, when it comes to public infra, we see a project launched with great fanfare. Yet, a few years or even sometimes months down the line, the system is faulty, cameras not working or relaying is interrupted for some reasons Then, long repairs begin and it is back to old ways for people who are no longer vigilant or disciplined.

Opt for good quality at inception itself and plan for scenarios of quick repairs in case of breakdowns. Regular inspection and maintenance will ensure necessary infra does its job.
