London: Former British Prime Minister David Cameron, who quit after losing June 23 Brexit vote, yesterday announced his resignation as an MP with immediate effect.
His announcement, made in an interview, is a reversal of previous statements by the former PM. The 49-year-old Conservative leader had initially said he would continue as an MP until the next general election.
His resignation will pave way for a by-election in his Oxfordshire seat of Witney that he has represented since 2001. He went on to become Conservative leader in 2005 and served as prime minister for six years from 2010.
Cameron's retreat from elected office comes after controversy over his resignation honours list. He was accused of awarding his âcronies', media reported.
