The remains of a sister of a convicted child sex attacker were exhumed on Tuesday night, 22 years after she leaped to her death.

Police removed the body of Belinda Day from a church graveyard at around midnight.

The mother-of-three, who was just 27 when she committed suicide, was the sister of Tommy Dance now serving 21 years for rape and sexual assaults.

Belinda, known as Binny, threw herself from cliffs at Budleigh Salterton, Devon, in 1989.

At the time it was not known why she took her own life.

But police investigating a sex ring now have evidence that she was the victim of "sexual abuse and violent rape".

Devon and Cornwall Police said her body was being exhumed to obtain DNA but declined to give details of how it will help the investigation. They said they were very confident that arrests would be made once Belinda's DNA profile had been obtained.

Detective Constable Michael Chalmers said that witnesses had already come forward and that "suspects had been identified".

"It is clear that Binny was sexually abused and violently raped over an extended period.

"We will do whatever is necessary to bring her abusers to justice," he added.
