Inflammatory foci (magenta) are no longer detectable after the therapy. PIC COURTESY/Charite
Conventional rheumatoid arthritis drugs continuously suppress immunity rather than removing disease-driving B cells.
To treat refractory cases, Charite researchers are testing CD19-targeted CAR T-cell therapy an advanced immunotherapy that genetically modifies a patient's own immune T cells to recognise and destroy cancer cells.
Patients receive brief chemotherapy before a single infusion of genetically reprogrammed T cells, which eliminate harmful B cells in the body. This allows the immune system to rebuild without autoimmune memory.
