Bangladesh's former military general who played a key role in 2007 in installing an army-backed interim government replacing a caretaker one at the time has been arrested.

"Retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury has been arrested in relation to five cases," an officer said, without explaining the charges.

Chowdhury has been Bangladesh's ambassador to Australia and a member of parliament from the Jatiya Party, an ally of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League.
