Israel ordered new evacuations from parts of Gaza City on Tuesday, as a study led by the U.N. children's agency found that one in six children are acutely malnourished in the isolated and largely devastated north of the territory, where the city is located.

The report finds deepening misery across the territory, where Israel's air and ground offensive, launched in response to Hamas' attack, has killed over 29,000 Palestinians, obliterated entire neighborhoods and displaced more than 80 per cent of the population. The US, Israel's top ally, has been working with mediators Egypt and Qatar to try to broker another cease-fire and hostage release agreement. Hamas' top political leader Ismail Haniyeh was in Cairo to meet with Egyptian officials on Tuesday, but there was no expectation of a breakthrough.

The Israeli military meanwhile ordered the evacuation of the Zaytoun and Turkoman neighborhoods on the southern edge of Gaza City, an indication that Palestinian militants are still putting up stiff resistance in areas of northern Gaza that the Israeli military said had been largely cleared. Residents said there have been airstrikes and heavy ground fighting in eastern parts of Gaza City over the past two days. "The situation is very difficult. We are trapped inside our homes," said a resident of Zaytoun.

UN Security Council voting on Gaza

Arab nations are putting to a vote a UN resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza, hoping to show global support for ending the war. The Security Council will vote on the resolution at 10 am EST (1500 GMT) Tuesday. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield says the Biden administration will veto the resolution as it may hamper US efforts for a deal between the warring parties.
