Hong Kong court quashes fraud conviction against Jimmy Lai

Jimmy Lai’s 2022 fraud conviction over rented office space has been overturned by a Hong Kong court. The veteran media entrepreneur, however, continues to serve a 20-year sentence handed down in another case

A Hong Kong court has quashed fraud convictions against Jimmy Lai, 78. Founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily, Lai will stay in prison because he was sentenced to 20 years weeks ago after being convicted in another case.

The conviction overturned on Thursday was from an earlier fraud case regarding rented office space. Lai had earlier been sentenced to five years and nine months in prison in 2022.
