Researchers at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) have designed MiPAL, a low-cost, single-element speaker that beams audio directly to a single listener like a ray of light.
Utilising acoustic and elastic metamaterials, the system modulates ultrasound waves to harness sound's nonlinear behavior in air, sharply focusing audio while blocking side leakage.
Once commercialised, it can deliver personalised audio experiences in public spaces without creating noise pollution.
