What happens when everybody believes that the Messiah has returned, except well, the ‘Messiah' himself? It appears that a bearded Australian backpacker has been forced to shout from the rooftops to deny these rumours, after he was labelled Jesus and mobbed by fans who wanted selfies with him.

Like Jesus Christ, Daniel Christos was even pictured having his feet washed. Pics/Facebook

Dressed in long flowing robes and walking barefoot with a staff, photographs of longhaired Daniel Christos went viral as people screamed "Jesus, welcome back Jesus" at him when he first arrived in Nairobi a fortnight ago.

Pictures of the computer science graduate are being posted with the hashtag #JesusinNairobi for followers to keep track of his movements in the region. The flummoxed software engineer, who hails from Perth, was then forced to take to Facebook to quell the rumours. "I am not Jesus! I have never pretended to be," Christos announced on Facebook.

"Every single corner I walk on in Nairobi I have noticed someone either taking a photo or video… while hundreds of times a day I hear people calling out ‘Jesus'."

In a television interview with channel NTV, Christos described the attention he received as "intense" and "uncomfortable" and gave a detailed family history to distance himself from any links to the Virgin Mary. "To be honest I am natural, I walk barefoot and that's the only link I have with him [Jesus]," Christos told the channel.

Though, he forgot to mention his surname has a very Christ-like ring to it.
