Tesla puts steering-wheel-free Cybercabs on Austin roads in new autonomous driving test

Tesla has deployed dozens of gold-colored, steering-wheel-free Cybercabs on public roads in Austin, Texas.

Lacking traditional pedals or controls, these purpose-built vehicles prevent passengers from intervening during emergencies, serving as a test for autonomous technology.

While Tesla has operated an Austin robotaxi service with safety drivers and conventional controls since June 2025, the Cybercab represents a new phase.
