US District Judge Leonie Brinkema temporarily blocked the Trump administration from proceeding with a new $1.776-billion settlement fund called the "Anti-Weaponisation Fund" on Saturday.
The Trump administration had announced this on Monday. The fund was meant to compensate Trump's allies who believe they have been unjustly investigated and prosecuted, an arrangement that Democrats and government watchdogs derided as "corrupt" and unconstitutional.
The fund was created after Trump agreed to drop a $10-billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax returns. Brinkema scheduled a June 12 hearing for arguments on whether to extend her order barring the government from moving forward with the fund, while pending litigation challenges on it. The White House declined to comment on the ruling to the press, referring their questions to the Justice Department.
A Justice Department spokesperson said on Saturday, "We will not allow the policy preferences of judges to interfere with our efforts to provide restitution to victims of lawfare."
A US judge has ordered the removal of President Donald Trump's name from the title of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It needs to be in effect within 14 days, according to the order. A spokesperson for the centre said they would appeal the name-change order.
A member from the Kennedy family, Maria Shriver, took to X, "An appropriate birthday present on my uncle's birthday today. A federal judge ruled that President Trump and the Kennedy Center Board acted unlawfully in renaming the Kennedy Center." Trump last year announced the addition of his name to the institution across the nation's capital.
