A fresh vessel-related incident has been reported off Oman's Shinas port, prompting authorities to gather more information about the situation. The Indian Embassy in Muscat said it is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with local officials.
The incident marks the third maritime emergency reported off the coast of Oman in recent days, following two separate incidents involving vessels carrying Indian crew members.
In a statement posted on X, the Indian Embassy in Muscat said, "We have learnt of an incident involving a vessel off Shinas port of Oman earlier today. We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the local authorities for further details."
Officials have not yet released information about the vessel involved or the nature of the incident.
The latest development comes days after a fire broke out aboard MT Marivex on June 8. The vessel, carrying 24 Indian seafarers, was sailing south of the Strait of Hormuz when the fire was reported, reported IANS.
At an inter-ministerial briefing, officials said all Indian crew members on board were safe.
"This is the preliminary information which we have received. As per available information, all Indian seafarers are presently safe," Shipping Division Director Opesh Kumar Sharma had said at the time.
Authorities were also trying to determine whether the vessel had been struck by a projectile before the fire broke out.
A second incident was reported on June 10 when commercial vessel MT Settebello came under attack off the coast of Oman.
Of the 24 Indian crew members aboard the vessel, 21 were rescued. Three others were initially reported missing.
However, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed on Thursday that the missing seafarers had been found dead.
"It is deeply unfortunate to learn of the tragic incident aboard the Palau-flagged MT Settebello. Sadly, three Indian seafarers initially reported missing are now confirmed dead after bodies have been located and identified," Sonowal said, reported the news agency.
Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased, the minister said the government would provide all necessary assistance.
"This is a profound loss to our maritime family," Sonowal said, adding that officials had been directed to ensure the immediate repatriation of the rescued crew members and the return of the mortal remains of the deceased.
