Meteorologists and weather agencies have warned that this could be the strongest hurricane in the island's recorded history.
The storm is expected to make landfall on Tuesday morning, bringing life-threatening flooding and a severe storm surge.
According to meteorological agencies, Melissa has been moving slowly across the warm waters of the Caribbean, intensifying as it approaches Jamaica.
While the officials have warned that the hurricane could bring rainfall measured in feet, the devastating hurricane poses a significant risk of flash floods and landslides.
Asserting about the hurricane approaching the country, the Jamaican Prime Minister said, "There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5 hurricane; that is why we are focusing on speed of recovery. That's the challenge."
