The whiplash decision comes after one of the three judges overseeing the trial stepped down over criticism surrounding her participation in a forthcoming documentary about the case

Diego Maradona’s former doctor, Leopoldo Luque, arrives for a trial hearing in San Isidro, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires

Diego Maradona died in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery. His seven-member medical team is on trial for the conditions of his home recovery after major surgery, which prosecutors have described as grossly negligent. If the trial is restarted, the 20 hearings, where more than 40 witnesses have testified so far, will be invalidated

The two remaining judges have scheduled a hearing for Thursday, during which they are expected to announce their decision on how to move forward

If found guilty of causing Maradona’s death on purpose, his medical team could go to jail for 8 to 25 years. They are accused of continuing treatment even though they knew it might lead to his death
