Meanwhile, the Pentagon says US forces have destroyed 16 Iranian mine-laying vessels believed to be involved in operations around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint. Washington fears Tehran may attempt to disrupt shipping lanes or block energy exports passing through the narrow waterway.
