Spain has deployed military units to Ceuta after thousands of migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave from neighbouring Morocco by sea and land, overwhelming local security forces. Spanish authorities say at least nine people died during the chaotic crossings as large crowds breached border barriers and swam around coastal breakwaters. The Armed Forces have been sent to assist the Civil Guard in restoring order, while Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska are visiting Ceuta to assess the crisis. Spain says Morocco is cooperating to stop further crossings and facilitate the return of those who entered illegally.
