The Gunners skipper settled the match with his 33rd league goal of 2011, one behind Thierry Henry's club record for a calendar year.

Van Persie's moment came when Song played the ball over the top and his first-time volley smashed in off the post as Arsenal went fourth in the table. His goal ensured Arsene Wenger's team extended their unbeaten run to eight league matches.

Former players and managers were invited onto the pitch before the game to celebrate the club's landmark anniversary and salute the home supporters.

Meanwhile, Nani and Wayne Rooney scored two goals each as Manchester United bounced back from their Champions League exit with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Wolves at Old Trafford here on Saturday.

Nani put United ahead in the 17th minute and Rooney scored a second 10 minutes later. Steven Fletcher halved the deficit with his 11th in 16 matches just after half time but Nani restored the lead before Rooney added United's fourth.
