But Dhawan's 150-ball 248 was the highest by an Indian after Virender Sehwag (219 not out) and Sachin Tendulkar (200 not out). Earlier this year, Dhawan also struck the fastest century by a Test debutant.
"I was aware of the record and it felt really special to score these runs," Dhawan was quoted as saying by www.bcci.tv.
"When I got out in the 44th over it occurred to me that had I batted till the end I had a chance to score a triple hundred. I am happy with what I scored though.
It did cross my mind that I joined Sachin âpaaji' and Viru âpaaji' in scoring a double century in a one-day game," he said.
Dhawan enjoyed his innings against South Africa in their own backyard in a series that is a warm-up for India's tour later this year.u00a0
