Former Manchester United ace Denis Irwin downplayed the importance of Red Devils' weekend encounter against Liverpool.

Irwin, who played for United from 1990 to 2002, doesn't believe the result against Kenny Dalglish's side will affect United's title ambitions.

United trail neighbours Manchester City by two points and risk falling further behind, if they fail against Liverpool at Old Trafford this Saturday.

"Yes, we have a big game this weekend. Liverpool for me have always been considered our biggest rivals. We've won 19 championships, they've won 18u00a0-- on that front we've always been rivals. But we're at home and we'll hopefully win the game.

City are at Aston Villa on Sunday and everybody will expect them to win the game. But that could work out to be a tough game. It's what the EPL is all about, you can't take it for granted. You saw it last week when City dropped points at Everton. Every team can compete.

There's still a long way to go, plenty of ups and downs," said the 46-year-old Irishman, who was in the city yesterday to display Manchester United's 2010-11 EPL trophy.
