New Zealand coach Andy Moles failed to hide his disappointment after admitting his team had "under-performed" in the opening Test against India.

The hosts go into the fourth day trailing by 166 runs with just seven second-innings wickets remaining after another day dominated by India and Sachin Tendulkar in particular.

Tendulkar hit 160 as the tourists were bowled out for 520 before reducing New Zealand to 75 for three at the close.

Moles was dismayed with his charges' efforts with India closing in on their first Test victory on New Zealand soil since 1976.

"We find ourselves in a very difficult position.

"We've been outplayed for the first three days and we've got to make sure we show a bit more character over the next two.

"We've under-performed, we dropped four catches, there were balls in the outfield we should have cut off.

"It often happens when you're under the pump and such great players are playing well but there's no excuse.

"It's not a very good advert for the Test team so far in this game."

Tendulkar confirmed morale was high in the India camp as they sniff victory.

"It is always a good feeling to be in a position that we are in," he said.

"I think we are in a strong position now and that is what really matters to us. There is a terrific atmosphere in the dressing room.

"We have led from the front from the first session of this Test match and at this point in time we are very much on our way to achieving something good. But we don't want to take anything for granted."
