Ousted! Roger Federer serves to Briton Andy Murray in the semis of the Qatar Open yesterday.

British third seed Andy Murray beat world number two Roger Federer 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-2 to reach the Qatar Open final yesterday.

This was minutes after American Andy put out Gael Monfils 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-3 in the day's first semi-final.

Roddick reached his first final since September when he carved a fine win in a high quality match against Gael Monfils in the semi-finals of the Qatar Open yesterday.

The former World No 1 from the USA also showed signs of evolving into a more measured and varied player during his 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-3 win over the brilliant but inconsistent Frenchman.

"There wasn't a whole lot between us. I just stayed the course," said Roddick who will face either Roger Federer or Andy Murray in Saturday's final."I concentrated pretty well in the third set. It was just a matter of winning the points at the right time."

Roddick was also pleased with the style in which he was able to play. "He has an interesting dynamic because he just begs you to come forward, and then he will come up with a passing shot," he said.

"So it's a matter of staying the course and not getting discouraged by it. It was a physical match but I have done a lot of hard work in close season. I wasn't in shape at the end of last year after various injuries and stiff, but now I feel better."

Conditions were a little too slow for the world's fastest server to boom down aces, and instead he worked his way into the baseline rallies very competently, and also won a good points at the net.

Monfils missed out on closing Set One, serving at 5-4, and was unable to find the right shot at crucial moments in the final set.
