England head coach Thomas Tuchel is expected to continue in his role through UEFA Euro 2028 after reportedly retaining the backing of the Football Association (FA), despite the Three Lions' exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the semifinal stage.

England's long wait to secure a major men's trophy for the first time since their legendary 1966 World Cup triumph goes on. A devastating 2-1 loss to reigning champions Argentina brought a painful end to their title dreams.

Anthony Gordon initially put the Three Lions in front in the 55th minute, but a late surge from Argentina saw Enzo Fernandez level the match in the 85th minute, before Lautaro Martinez broke English hearts with a dramatic stoppage-time winner to set up a final against Spain.

According to ESPN, the FA remains committed to Tuchel, whose contract was extended before the FIFA World Cup and now runs until 2028. The report added that the governing body wants the German coach to continue leading the team despite England falling short of their goal of winning the World Cup.

In the wake of the painful exit, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham lauded the immense commitment of the squad, the management, and the fanbase while expressing deep sorrow over the semifinal result.

"It is heartbreaking to be so close," FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said in a statement.

"The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament. I would like to thank them all and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home. We felt your support every step of the way, and we are all so disappointed not to go further."

Resilient Argentina end English dreams

The English side seemed destined for the World Cup final match after striking first early in the second period. Gordon coolly tapped in a cross from Morgan Rogers in the 55th minute, breaking the deadlock after a gruelling first half.

Their persistent attacking eventually paid off in the 85th minute, with Enzo Fernandez slotting home the equaliser after being set up by captain Lionel Messi.

Argentina completed their stunning turnaround deep into injury time when captain Lionel Messi floated a dangerous cross into the box for Lautaro Martinez, who directed a powerful header into the net.
