On Day 1 of the fourth Test match against England, Team India's vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, has achieved a unique feat in the history of the traditional format of the game.
During the Day 1 play of the fourth Test, the left-hander scored 37 runs off 48 deliveries, including two boundaries and a maximum. Later, he was forced to leave the field as he suffered a hit on his foot while batting.
Despite being injured, Pant had enough runs under his belt to become the first-ever wicketkeeper-batsman to score 1000 runs in away country in Test history.
Currently, the Uttarakhand-born cricketer has amassed 1018 runs on English soil, including four centuries and the same number of half-centuries. So far, his best score in England is 146 runs. Except for him, no other wicketkeeper-batsman has achieved the feat of scoring 1000 runs outside his home country.
Pant also has the most runs by a visiting wicketkeeper-batsman in England, next to legendary MS Dhoni's tally of 778 runs. The 27-year-old also became the sixth batsman after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul to complete 1,000 runs in England in Test cricket.
Speaking on Pant's injury, Sai Sudharsan, who scored a half-century, said that the vice-captain seemed to be in a lot of pain.
"He was in a lot of pain, definitely, but they have gone for scans. We'll get to know overnight, probably get the information tomorrow," he said.
Team India will resume Day 2 with the overnight score of 264 runs for the loss of four wickets in 83 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur will come at the crease, having scored 19 runs each.
Skipper Ben Stokes has been so far the successful bowler for the 'Three Lions'. Bowling 14 overs, he has claimed two wickets by conceding 47 runs. Chris Woakes and Liam Dawson have bagged one wicket each.
Lead pacer Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Joe Root are yet to claim any wickets. The ongoing Test match is crucial from India's perspective as they are trailing by 1-2 in the five-match Test series.
