India claimed the number one spot in the ICC One-day rankings for the first time after beating New Zealand in their opening Compaq tri-series One-day International cricket at Colombo Friday.


India claimed the number one spot in the ICC One-day rankings for the first time after beating New Zealand in their opening Compaq tri-series One-day International cricket at Colombo Friday.

India beat New Zealand by six wickets in a day/night encounter at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

New Zealand, winning the toss and batting, were bowled out for 155 runs in 46.3 overs. Their captain Daniel Vettori was the top scorer with 25 runs and was also the most sucessful bowler, finishing with the figures of 2-33.

Indian bowlers Ashish Nehra (3-24) and Yuvraj Singh (3-31) ran through the New Zealand batting line-up, while R.P. Singh (2-22), Ishant Sharma (2-26) finished the mopping up operations.

Sachin Tendulkar top scored for India with 46 runs as India reached the target in 40.3 overs. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (35 not out) and Suresh Raina (45 not out) saw the team home.
