"He is not your typical left-hander, he's not as comfortable working onto the leg-side, but looks confident cutting and driving," Taylor was quoted as saying by PTI. Cowan saved Australia the blushes with a fighting 68 at the MCG yesterday.

"He did a very good job blunting the new ball. Cowan was very disciplined. He left a lot more balls than most in the top order in recent times," the former skipper felt.

After adding 46 runs with opener David Warner, Cowan resurrected the Australia innings with former skipper Ricky Ponting. The duo added 113 for the third wicket.

Cowan's scoring rate (68 off 177 balls) was also backed by Taylor. "His strike rate is okay as long as he goes on to make a big score," the former opener felt. "He made the bowlers bowl to him. He knows where his off-stump is," he added.

The 29-year-old was perhaps given the baggy green at the right time. "You couldn't have asked for a better time to be selected," Taylor opined.
