Like football, cricket may soon see an umpire flashing a red card to eject cricketers from a game for serious disciplinary breaches. Once ejected, the cricketer will be out for the entire duration of the game.
This was announced by the Marylebone Cricket Club World Cricket Committee during a press conference yesterday after their meeting on December 6 and 7 in Mumbai. The committee also discussed Sachin Tendulkar's theory of two pitches in first-class cricket but didn't see enough merit in its implementation.
The committee will send its recommendations to the MCC, the lawmakers of the game, for its approval and if approved, the new law will come into effect at all levels of the game from October 1, 2017.
When asked if introduction of red cards means that cricket can no longer be considered a gentleman's game, chairman of the committee Mike Brearley replied in the negative but said: "Cricket is the only sport where there is no 'in-match' punishment for poor behaviour."
