A historic milestone for Mumbai cricket unfolded at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday in the inaugural Nuvama Private T20 Mumbai Women's League. Indian international Sayali Satghare led from the front, delivering a vital three-wicket haul to guide the SOBO Mumbai Falcons to a thrilling 16-run victory over the Thane Sky Risers in the tournament's curtain-raiser.
Chasing a formidable target of 174, Thane's opener Mansi Patil fought valiantly with a top score of 46. While Mahek Pokar (23, retired hurt) and Saima Thakor (29) showed flashes of brilliance, the Sky Risers struggled to build partnerships against a disciplined Falcons bowling unit led by Satghare.
A late cameo from wicketkeeper Khushi Bhatia, who smashed a quick 28 off 16 balls, momentarily kept Thane within striking distance. However, her crucial dismissal in the 19th over effectively ended the chase, leaving the Sky Risers stranded at 157/8 as Sayali Satghare's team got the first win of the season.
Earlier in the day, the Sky Risers failed to fully exploit a dream start engineered by their captain, Saima Thakor. Thakor created history by taking a wicket with the very first delivery of the tournament, picking up a second in the same over. However, Thane's fielding let them down as they dropped a staggering nine catches. The fielding lapses allowed the Falcons to rebuild, fueled by an unbeaten 45 from Hurley Gala, alongside key contributions from Riya Chaudhari (43), Simran Shaikh (30), and Sarika Koli (26) to finish on 173/6.
The women's opener followed a dramatic start to the men's tournament on Monday. Defending champions Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals, led by Siddhesh Lad, clinched a nerve-wracking Super Over victory against the Sarfaraz Khan-led Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburb.
Both franchises finished their standard 20 overs deadlocked at 165 runs. In the subsequent super over, the Royals set a target of 16/1 before restricting the Tigers to just 11/1 to lock down a thrilling win.
The dual tournaments will feature 30 matches at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, showcasing Mumbai's finest cricket talent before culminating in the finals on June 13. Fans can catch all the action live on Star Sports Network and JioHotstar.
