Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bowl first. The Mumbai Indians have not won the first game of the IPL campaign since 2013.

Ajinkya Rahane opened the innings with New Zealand star Finn Allen, and the duo attacked from the off. Rahane scored 67 runs in 40 balls and set up the KKR for a big total in the first innings.

Shardul Thakur starred with the ball for MI. The debutant took 3 wickets for 39 from his four overs, including the important wickets of Allen, Rahane and Cameron Green.

Rinku Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi finished the innings strongly for the visitors. The duo added more than 50 runs together to take Kolkata Knight Riders to 220 runs at the end of the first innings. Raghuvanshi scored 51 runs off 29 balls.

Mumbai Indians will have to chase 221 runs to register a win at home. The hosts will aim to win the opening match of an IPL season for the first time in 13 years.
