Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti remained philosophical after his side went down 2-0 at Hoffenheim to suffer a first Bundesliga defeat of the new season.

With one eye on next week's Champions League opener against Anderlecht, the Italian had rotated his squad, leaving Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and on-loan Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez among the substitutes.

It was Hoffenheim who took the lead on 27 minutes through Mark Uth. He later finished off a fine team move to double Hoffenheim's lead five minutes into the second half. "It was a difficult game. We tried a lot, but in some situations we were not 100 per cent focused," Ancelotti said.

"We did not have much space and tried to open the channels, but that did not work so well and sometimes that happens in football."

Last season, Hoffenheim took four points from their two games against Bayern, with the 1-0 home win in April marking their first ever victory in 18 meetings.
