New world champions Spain enjoyed a vibrant celebration parade on an open-top bus through the streets of Madrid on Monday evening, with a jubilant crowd of an estimated two million people turning out to celebrate, according to local authorities.
The players, some shirtless, others holding drinks, set off on their procession under a blazing sun along the main arteries in the city centre, where a sea of fans in red and yellow were waiting before the squad arrived at Cibeles Square.
The Spanish team boarded an open-top bus emblazoned with the words âStars shine together', while players carrying the World Cup trophy and wearing âSomos Campeones' (We Are Champions) shirts danced and interacted with fans along the route. The players were received by King Felipe VI and the royal family, and then Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, before kicking off the parade.
"It's been an emotional and proud experience to represent a wonderful country with such passionate and devoted fans. We are filled with joy," Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said before the parade began.
Skipper Rodri said this was the crowning achievement of his career: "I've always said it, winning with your country is the most beautiful thing there is, above all a World Cup."
Match-winning goalscorer Torres joked he was "flying, literally" as the team returned from the United States after beating Argentina 1-0 in New Jersey. "I'm very happy to see how excited all of the children are⦠[and] to have the parade and celebrate with all of the Spaniards," he said.
Spain's World Cup winners' bus parade started at Moncloa before heading towards Cibeles Square, where hordes of fans had reserved their spots hours in advance.
Players were introduced one by one, each choosing the song played as they walked onto the stage. Alex Baena, celebrating his 25th birthday, entered with the World Cup trophy. Coach De la Fuente was thrusted into the air by his players after being introduced.
Singers Aitana, Ana Mena and Lola Indigo were among those entertaining the crowd and the players.
