The out-of-form duo of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer were the most notable omissions from Thomas Tuchel's 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, which begins on June 11.

"From day one, we are trying to build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select the 26 most talented players," Tuchel said on Friday.

"Teams win championships [not individuals]. It's as simple as that. And what we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team," the German coach added.

The squad will be led by striker Harry Kane, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice also included. Striker Ivan Toney was the only surprising inclusion, considering he has played just once for England since Euro 2024 after his move to the Saudi Pro League.
