Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez has released a public statement on social media to express regret over his recent public criticism of the club's board following Tuesday's 2-0 loss against Atletico Madrid.
The Argentine defender had previously voiced his dissatisfaction with the club's leadership during a post-match interview, stating that he anticipated greater squad reinforcement during the summer transfer window and specifically questioning technical director Jason Wilcox. Martinez emphasised the necessity for more investment to remain competitive against rival clubs.
Responding via an Instagram story, Martinez said he has since met with Manchester United's executive leadership and manager Michael Carrick, describing their discussions as constructive and positive.
Admitting that his frustration following the European defeat influenced his decision to speak out inappropriately, Martinez acknowledged that his comments were counterproductive to maintaining club harmony while affirming that all parties remain committed to driving the team toward future success.
"Today I met with the club's leadership and the manager. It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday's game. Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity. The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise," he said.
Reflecting on the importance of internal alignment, Martinez stressed the need for solidarity across the squad, technical staff, and board as Manchester United moves forward from the incident.
"Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that. I know that every single person at Manchester United is doing everything possible to achieve our shared ambition: bringing the success that this club and its supporters deserve. With this situation now behind us, we are fully focused on winning together," he added.
Manchester United will look to end their winless run against Leeds on Sunday before travelling to Como in the mid-week for UEFA Champions League action.
