Bhanot draws similarity of CWG construction delays with home repairs and a fake letter attracts much amusement

The run-up to the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games here is not just throwing up scam after scam, it is also throwing up a host of jokes. The latest being CWG Organising Committee secretary general Lalit Bhanot drawing a similarity of the construction delays at the venues with that of regular home renovation problems.

Even mascot Shera can afford a laugh

Bhanot and CWG OC Randhir Singh have been doing the rounds at various stadiums and during one such visit, Bhanot let out this howler: "Delays in construction work occur even when we are building or renovating our home. Even after we move in, there are few things left to be done here and there and we eventually get it done. I think the situation with the construction delays of the venues too is quite similar to when we do work in our homes," Bhanot said.

He covered it up with some more logical talk. "There have been unprecedented delays, but as you can see, most of the work is complete. There are only a few final touches here and there that need to be done and that will happen in due course. I don't think there is any need to panic," he added.

In another incident, CWG Federation CEO Michael Hooper was livid when shown a letter (a copy of which is with MiD DAY) signed by him that stated, among other things, that CWG OC chief Suresh Kalmadi and Bhanot are "eating away funds in parties and female friends." The letter further states that "all of Kalmadi's chamchas are employed at big posts in the OC" and that "any Tom, Dick and Harry is given five-star offices and that they eat, drink and enjoy women."

Hooper had a great laugh at the letter. "I don't even know the meaning of the word chamchas for God's sake. This is ridiculous," he said.
