Led by Naresh Churi, another Mumbai player, who played for Railways, the team included future Test players like Maninder Singh, L Sivaramakrishnan and Chetan Sharma.

Tipnis batted in the middle order and bowled left-arm spin.

Former Test cricketer Kenia Jayantilal, who played alongside Tipnis at MB Union club, remembered him as a "fighting cricketer, who was also very outspoken and direct." At one stage, Tipnis did not allow cancer to come in the way of him playing cricket.

The departed cricketer represented Mahindras and Hindustan Petroleum on the inter-office circuit.
