Formidable R Girish (+10) of Central Railway thrived on significant breaks to romp to a convincing 91-80, 95-81 win over Pratik Patel (+60) of Mulund Lions Club in the first round of the Goldfilled Open Handicap Snooker Tournament at the Catholic Gymkhana yesterday.
Joining Girish in the second round was Shyam Kotak of PJ Hindu Gymkhana who rallied from the loss of the opening frame to beat Gavin D'Souza of Catholic Gymkhana 105-114, 122-91, 118-73 in an exciting contest.
However, fancied Derek Sippy of Catholic Gymkhana crashed out in the first round. Enjoying a handicap of +60, Vishal Upsham of Vashi Gymkhana overcame Sippy 100-74, 98-116, 104-63.
After dropping the opening frame, Sippy snatched the second frame in a close finish to force the decider and keep his hopes alive. But Upsham surged to a substantial lead in the third and final frame as Sippy struggled once again and had little hope of a recovery.
