Rio de Janeiro: Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder has been sent home from the Rio Olympics after consuming alcohol during a night out in Rio on Saturday night.

The Royal Dutch Gymnastics Federation (KNGU) confirmed the 33-year-old left the Olympic Village after qualifying for the final of the rings event and did not return until the early hours of Sunday morning.
Van Gelder, who served a one-year suspension after taking cocaine three days before the Dutch championships in 2009, has therefore been kicked off the team after violating rules concerning the consumption of alcohol and leaving the team's base. Holland's chef de mission Maurits Hendriks told KNGU's website: "It's been a very difficult decision for us to take."
