Defending Wimbledon champion Serena Williams courted controversy yesterday by reportedly saying in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine that a 16-year-old gang-rape victim shouldn't have put herself in that position.

Williams later issued a statement implying that the comments were "what I supposedly said."u00a0"What happened in Steubenville was a real shock for me. I was deeply saddened.

I am currently reaching out to the girl's family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. What was written - what I supposedly said - is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame."

Wiliams made the comments about the Steubenville (Ohio) rape case where two high school football players sexually abused a drunk girl at a party in August last year.
