The Spanish duo of defending champion Rafael Nadal and former winner David Ferrer crushed local hopes yesterday to advance to the second round of the Japan Open.

World No 2 Nadal thumped Go Soeda 6-3, 6-2. The 2007 champion Ferrer beat Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-3 victory.
